- Although the courtcupboard or tier
of shelves is very simple and unadorned in style, it is mostly
concealed by an expensive carpet, complimenting the rich brocade
hangings, and the elaborate tiled floor. The shelves hold a wealth
of scientific and astronomical instruments. (The elongated skull,
designed to be seen sideways on to the picture, was not a standard
feature of a Renaissance household.)
