- The bed dominates the room, eith
its rich red draperies and canopy suspended from the ceiling.
Against the back wall stand a high carved chair and a bench settle
with thick cushions. It is a prosperous household: there is an
ornate bronze chandelier, the windows are half glazed and a polished
metal mirror hangs on the wall. A woven carpet is very extravagantly
spread on the floor near the bed although for the most part the
floor boards are bare
