- The Duke holds court as he dines
in great splendour. Elaborate tapestries hang on the walls, the
floor is covered with woven rush matting, and the ceiling is
decorated and gilded. A canopy of state hangs over the duke,
who is protected from the direct heat of the fire by a woven
rush firescreen. Rich cloth covers the settle upon which he and
his guest of honour sit, and fine linen covers the table and
the side cupboard, upon which magnificent gold plate is displayed.
Under the cloth however, the furniture is basic and unadorned.
The table is a board laid on plain trestles.
