Entertainment - The Medieval Style

At a time when the television and the computer were unheard of, you can just imagine how boring it could be to live during the medieval period. However, just like the people who lived during the pre-digital era, medieval folks learned ways and means to entertain themselves. And just like the individuals who are born during the modern times, people then knew how to relax, unwind, and have some fun.

Feasts were very popular during the medieval times as a type of entertainment. Social gatherings were held to celebrate holidays, special occasions, and to commemorate the lives of saints. Noble men and women would then gather in castles, manors, or courtyards to share gastronomic meals, good company, and fine wines. Aside from that, such events would never be complete without music and dancing, just like how people celebrate special events in modern times.

Another type of entertainment during the Middle Ages was the tournament. It is a type of sporting event that was usually held in a large arena, which was originally designed to test the knights' fighting skills, like jousting. People all over the kingdom would then gather to watch the competition and cheer for their favourite fighter. This can be likened to sports competitions held in stadiums today.

Music and performing arts were also very popular means of entertainment during those times. In fact, they were considered important parts of social gatherings, whether by common people or royalties. There would be minstrels singing in castles for the pleasure of the lords and ladies. Other times there will be jesters, acrobats, contortionists, jugglers and the like who would have a display of their talents to entertain a crowd. Such forms of entertainment are like the musical concerts and circuses that are quite popular today.
